(Matthews, North Carolina) April 1, 2009 - CEM Corporation, a leading global provider of
microwave laboratory instrumentation, is pleased to report today that the United States
Environmental Protection Agency’s Method 3546 for the microwave extraction of semi-volatile
organic compounds has been approved by the United States Consumer Product Safety Division
for use in its Test Method CPDC-CH-C1001-09 for the determination of phthalates in child care
items and toys.

“Microwave extraction is an extremely efficient method,” said Michael J. Collins, PhD, president
and CEO of CEM Corporation. “Not only does it allow chemists to use significantly less solvent,
but it is also much faster than other methods. Testing laboratories which implement Method 3546
for phthalates will find it to be a much better solution.”

CEM’s award-winning MARS Microwave Reaction System with Xpress Technology offers a
complete solution for fast, efficient solvent extraction. Utilizing CEM’s 40-mL all glass
GlassChem™ vessels instead of a Teflon® vessel with a glass insert, ensures that the integrity of
the extraction is preserved. In addition, the MARS uses 90% less solvent than conventional
methods, making it a much more environmentally-friendly alternative.

With conventional pressurized solvent extraction labs can process 3 samples per hour, but with
the MARS Microwave Reaction System chemists can extract and filter a remarkable 40 samples
per hour.
