CEM Awards 2009 Stacey Palasek Memorial Scholarship

Matthews, North Carolina (May 13, 2009)CEM Corporation, a leading global company
specializing in scientific solutions for critical laboratory applications, announced today that the
Company awarded the 2009 Stacey Palasek Memorial Scholarship to Lauren Cagley of
Providence Day School.

Michael J. Collins, Jr., Director of the Synthesis & Bioscience Divisions of CEM Corporation,
presented the $5,000 scholarship award at a reception held at the Company’s headquarters in
Matthews on Thursday, May 7, 2009.

lauren_cagley.pngLauren Cagley is a senior at Providence Day School who has been described by those who know her well as having a "curiosity and passion for learning.” In addition to her involvement in school and community activities, which include National Honor Society, Beta Club, Yearbook, Varsity Volleyball and Varsity Softball, Lauren also volunteers at McClintock Middle School where she tutors at-risk students in math and science. She took the initiative to introduce science lessons into the program where originally none existed. Lauren has participated in the Educational Research in Radio Astronomy program at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Greenbank, West Virginia. She was also a science scholar at Pisgah Astronomical Reseach Institute. Her future plans include attending North Carolina State University to study chemical/biochemical engineering with the ultimate goal of designing and developing pharmaceutical drugs.

In addition to Miss Cagley, the CEM Grant & Award Committee chose three other finalists who received $250 each: Jenay Powell and Emily Zuehlke, both of Charlotte Latin School, and Bridget VanDyne of Weddington High School.

The finalists, their families, Stacey Palasek’s husband, Matthew Palasek, of Charlotte and her
parents, David and Gail Boltz of Jamestown, New York, attended the reception along with
Stacey’s co-workers.

An energetic, caring person and brilliant scientist, Stacey Palasek was a research chemist with
CEM Corporation who passed away unexpectedly in 2006. She had an incredible passion for science
and was a gifted chemist working in the Company’s Bioscience Division. In honor of her
memory, CEM has established a $5,000 scholarship to assist young women who display the
desire and passion for science that Stacey had. It is available to female high school seniors from
Mecklenburg or Union County who plan to major in one of the sciences and have demonstrated a
passion for science, an outstanding academic record, excellent character and leadership qualities.
