Abstract
Lubricating oils and their additives are critical in reducing
friction, preventing corrosion, and extending equipment life
across numerous industrial applications. Quality control of
these oils often relies on sulfated ash testing to determine
the concentration of metallic additives. Traditional sulfated
ash methods are labor-intensive, time-consuming, and pose
significant safety risks due to open flames, high temperatures,
and handling of concentrated sulfuric acid. The Phoenix
BLACK™ Sulfated Ash system streamlines this process by
completing all steps within a single, controlled muffle furnace,
minimizing handling and exposure to hazardous materials.
Using ASTM D874-compliant procedures, lubricating oils were
ashed in CEM quartz fiber crucibles. Results demonstrate that
the Phoenix BLACK provides accurate, reproducible sulfated
ash values while significantly reducing overall analysis time
and improving safety. By combining robust temperature
control, integrated sulfuric acid treatment, and active vapor
scrubbing, the system enhances laboratory safety, efficiency,
and compliance with ASTM, USP, FDA, AOAC, ISO, Ph. Eur.,
JP, and other international standards, making it a reliable and
time-saving solution for routine lubricating oil analysis.
