Sample Preparation and Analysis of an In-Process Black Mass Using Batch Microwave Digestion

Abstract

The recovery of valuable elements from in-process black mass, a byproduct of lithium-ion battery recycling, plays a crucial role in advancing sustainable resource management within the battery industry. In-process black mass typically contains a range of critical metals, including lithium (Li), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), and manganese (Mn), which are essential for the production of new batteries. However, efficient extraction and recovery of these elements remains a significant challenge due to the complex composition and diverse chemical interactions within black mass. This study utilizes CEM’s MARS 6™ microwave digestion system to provide a rapid and efficient method to determine the elemental composition of in-process black mass.
