Microwave and Infrared for Moisture and Solids Analysis - iPower
Dual-Frequency Drying

Analyze wet and dry samples with unmatched speed.

Dual-frequency drying is an innovative process based on a combination of microwave and infrared energy sources controlled by an intelligent processing system. The low frequency microwaves penetrate the entire sample and rapidly remove volatiles through dipole rotation, while high frequency infrared energy evenly heats the surface and removes non-polar components through molecular vibration. This prevents burning and incomplete drying, which can arise from single frequency based Moisture Analyzers. The result is a direct method for virtually any sample type, with faster drying than traditional microwave and infrared-based systems.

Intelligent Temperature Control

Accurate and repeatable results come standard.

When using infrared temperature sensors, stray infrared irradiation can negatively impact sample temperature readings. The SMART 6 has a unique design to avoid stray light and provides highly accurate temperature control of samples. By automatically adjusting power to maintain the temperature setpoint, the risk of burning samples is reduced, and more accurate and repeatable results are obtained.

Sample Types

The use of dual-energy drying (microwave coupled with infrared) in the SMART 6 provides the capability of analyzing moisture/solids in any sample type, wet or dry. Listed below are matrices in which dual-energy drying has shown to offer benefits over single energy source (i.e. microwave-only or infrared-only) systems. This list is meant to provide a glimpse of the SMART 6’s versatility and capabilities and is not exhaustive. Please contact the CEM Process Control Support Team if you do not see your specific matrix of interest listed. CEM’s skilled team of chemists can provide previously developed robust methods or CEM offers full method development services if one is not available. Simply send us your sample and we will take care of the rest.

Testimonials

“We have a CEM SMART 6 system, and have been very pleased with it in the past year. Compared to our more lengthy methods, (5 hour vacuum) and our older CEM, the SMART 6 has returned accurate and repeatable results on a consistent basis.”

Rashad Gresham
Land O' Lakes, St Paul, MN

“We use the SMART 6 for latex based coatings to optimize our solids content process control. We used previous CEM systems (SMART 5) before, and the SMART 6 system provides us results 40% faster than the older CEM systems.”
