The Rapid Preparation of Infant Formula for Amino Acid Analysis
The proper manufacture of infant formula with appropriate nutrition is essential. The FDA regulates the minimum levels of several nutrients in infant formula, including protein and amino acid content. Typically, the amino acid profile in infant formula is monitored using AOAC Official Method 2018.06. This method requires a 24-hour acid hydrolysis treatment in an oven. Microwave-assisted methods can expedite this step. In this work, the CEM Discover Prep™ , a microwave-based sample preparation instrument, was used to hydrolyze infant formula, and the resulting amino acid profiles were compared to those established using traditional methods. The Discover Prep performed equally well as traditional methods when comparing recoveries and standard deviations, providing an alternative option to time-consuming oven methods.
